Hi, Everyone –
I have talked about the show “The Biggest Loser” before on my blog. Though these contestants are in a very controlled environment, there are quite a few helpful hints that come out of the show. In addition to the eating and exercise advice you can get watching the show, they also have quite a few recipes in Chef Rocco’s recipe corner on the Web site. Check out this one below for a healthier version of a chicken caesar salad:
291 calories per serving
PAM spray
4 large garlic cloves, 3 of them chopped
4 slices Ezekiel Bread
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, about 1-1/3 pounds
Nu-Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 cup fat-free sour cream
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
juice and zest of 2 lemons
2 tablespoons grated pecorino-romano
1 large head romaine, cleaned and cut into bite-size pieces
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350. Place bread on a baking sheet and bake until golden brown and very crisp, about 8 minutes. Lightly bruise 1 whole garlic clove and rub it over the surface of each piece of bread. Cut bread into 1-inch cubes and set aside.
2. Meanwhile, preheat a grill or grill pan over high heat. Season chicken breasts with Nu-Salt and pepper and spray lightly with PAM. Grill about 4 minutes per side, or until charred on the outside and just cooked through. Remove from grill and keep warm. Slice.
3. Meanwhile, together the 3 chopped garlic cloves with the fat-free sour cream, Dijon mustard, lemon juice and zest and pecorino. Season with freshly ground black pepper and Nu-Salt.
4. To serve, toss together the romaine with the sliced chicken, dressing and croutons. Adjust seasoning, if necessary. Although no actual salt is called for in this recipe, please add it as you see fit.

Hi, Everyone –
A New York Times article last week talked about the growing “fat acceptance movement” and how more attention is being paid to overall health and not just weight. It is definitely true that even a very slim person can be unhealthy, and that a healthy regimen of diet and exercise is key in maintaining overall health, not just weight. However, I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on this subject. What do you think about fat acceptance?

Hi, Everyone,
Kevin over at Weight Ladder posted today about finding the right weight-loss plan for you and you alone. This is a very good point that often times gets overlooked when people are looking for a quick fix. Everyone is different, every body is different and what might work for one person, will not necessarily work for another. The best thing to do is consult someone who knows what they are talking about. Got a question? Ask me!

Hi, Everyone –
Another season of The Biggest Loser debuted this week, continuing the phenomenon. This show has really produced some amazing results, and has no doubt inspired a number of people to undertake their own weight-loss journey. However, it is really important to remember that these people are under incredibly close supervision by medical professionals and are losing an uncommon amount of weight very fast.
I’m curious to hear if any of you have any feedback about this show. Do you think it inspires people, or does it give them a false sense of hope? If you are one of the few people who have not heard of The Biggest Loser, check it out on the NBC Web site here.

Hi, Everyone –
There are so many new and interesting ways to workout out there. Whether it’s working it on the Wii, yoga, videos or the gym, everyone seems to have a preferred way to pump iron. The most important thing is that you enjoy what you are doing so you will follow through and see results, and it’s always good to share methods – you just might inspire someone to get back up on the treadmill…or whatever it may be. What is your favorite way to work out?

Hi, Everyone –
WLS, or weight-loss surgery, can be very expensive and is often not covered by insurance. There is also a certain stigma surrounding the procedure, that being that it is unnecessary in some cases. Well, I have performed over 2,000 bariatric surgeries in my career, and I have seen first-hand that WLS is sometimes the only option to get someone healthy, or even to save their life. It can be very useful for someone with a BMI of 35 or greater who have not had success with other weight-loss methods.
A study came out in the September issue of the American Journal of Managed Care finding that the cost of bariatric surgery actually makes up for itself in 2-4 years; the health complications that go along with obesity will quickly overshadow the $17 – 26,000 price tag of WLS.
What are your perceptions of WLS? Do you think it is a procedure that should always be covered by insurance companies?

Hi, Everyone –
I think you all know that it is much easier to stick with a diet if you have a support system. Whether it is a friend, a family member, or online support forums, having someone there through the trials and triumphs is essential for success. However, while those close to you can be invaluable support pillars, they can sometimes also be a detriment to your success.
Your family may not immediately want to jump on the health bandwagon with you, but trust me, you can be a good influence and they will adapt. The problem with families these days is that they are all about convenience when it comes to food – we are just too busy!
My family always keeps our fruit drawer full of healthy and delicious options, that way there is no excuse to grab cookies, chips or any other member of the unhealthy snack family. There may be a period of time where they will miss certain food, and even a certain lifestyle, but they will soon get over it just as you did. I’d be interested to hear what you do to keep your friends and family on track. What tips and tricks do you use?

Hi, Everyone –
There is an interesting article on msn.com today. It talks about what a lack of sleep can do to your body and weight-loss efforts. According to the article, women who sleep six hours per night were 12 percent more likely to gain a significant amount of weight. Those who slept only five hours per night were 32 percent more likely!
The moral of the story here folks is that you need to get your beauty rest. Your body needs time to rejuvenate so turn off the tv, shut your computer and go get some sleep!

Hi, Everyone –
I’m sure that most of you out there like to take-on projects of some kind. Whether it’s DIY projects, hobbies, sports or whatever else, we all have things we like to do in our free time. Well, here’s a thought, how about you make yourself a project?
If I gave you a project, say at home or at work, you would probably do a great job! You would do the research and fill out the report and or paint the garage, whatever. Why not make yourself a project? Take it as seriously as you would take a work project, or your kids or your spouse. Make you a project.
